چکیده

The objective of this study was to determine the chemical composition and in situ degradability dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral (NDF) stockpiled perennial forage (SPF) or sun-cured hay (HAY) when collected at start end (October vs. December) fall grazing. Selected 6, 4-ha paddocks consisting meadow bromegrass alfalfa, were randomly assigned 1 2 replicated (n = 3) winter feeding systems (SPF HAY). Sampling done twice per year beginning (October) (December) from (a) field (b) harvested round bale over consecutive years. two (n=3) HAY (n=3)). SPF To evaluate degradability, duplicate nylon bags each experimental unit incubated for 0, 3, 10, 13, 25, 48, 72, 96 h five Hereford heifers fitted with rumen cannula. Relative HAY, had greater (p 0.01) OM (906 916 g/kg DM) NDF (653 631 concentrations. date no effect > 0.05) on CP, OM, ADF both forages, whereas forages sampled December. soluble fraction (S) DM October, December s (156, 138, 152 DM, respectively) relative (106 DM). potentially degradable (D) CP less < samples compared October (257 522 523 respectively). a (749 587 ADF) (770 591 NDF) HAY. type sampling did not affect effective NDF. Regardless decreased (SPF: 770 730 (HAY: 680 491 NDF). These findings suggest grazing is robust substitute beef cows.

Short communication Chemical composition, DM and NDF degradation kinetics in rumen of seven legume straws

Seven legume straws (Cicer arietinum, Vicia benghalensis, Vicia sativa, Vicia villosa, Vicia faba, Lens culinaris and Pisum sativum) were studied in rumen-cannulated rams. The chemical composition of the studied legume straws varied from 4.3 to 10.1% for ash, 6.1 to 11.4% for CP, 58.0 to 76.5% for NDF, 40.3 to 59.6% for ADF and 8.2 to 14.2% for ADL. Extent of degradation for DM and NDF by the n...

Stockpiled forage or limit-fed corn as alternatives to hay for gestating and lactating beef cows.

In Exp. 1, 31, 24, and 17 mature, pregnant Simmental x Angus cows (initial BW = 662.0 +/- 10.4 kg) in each of 3 yr were used to determine the efficacy of stockpiled orchardgrass, limit-fed corn, or ad libitum hay for maintaining cows in mid- to late gestation, respectively. In Exp. 2, 24 mature, pregnant crossbred cows (initial BW = 677.7 +/- 9.4 kg) per treatment in each of 3 yr were used to d...

Estimating forage protein degradation in the rumen

Forage proteins are degraded rapidly by rumen microorganisms and therefore supply relatively small quantities of undegraded intake protein (UIP). Growing cattle with high metabolizable protein requirements and lactating beef and dairy cows respond to UIP supplementation when fed high-forage diets, even though degradable intake protein (DIP) is adequate. This observation suggests that an accurat...

Microscopic investigation of changes in histology and digestibility in the rumen of a forage grass and a forage legume during the first growth stage.

An Italian "Dalita" ryegrass (Lolium italicum) and a European lucerne (Medicago sativa) were harvested at 5 different growth stages to determine the anatomical factors limiting their digestibility and in particular the effects of lignification of the tissues. In vitro digestibility, cell wall contents of the whole plant and stem of lucerne and of the whole plant, stem and leaf blade of ryegrass...
